The Last Supper

13th century
Fresco
Church of Saint Elias (Elizeja), Draguć, Croatia

The head of St. John is shown much lower on Jesus' breast than one might expect. A chalice to the left of Jesus resembles those in use in contemporary liturgies.

The Apostles' gestures may represent their question, "Is it I, Lord?" Judas would be the one dipping his hand in a dish. It is not unusual for images of this era to give him a halo.
